An energy complex was significantly impacted by Hurricane Florence in 2018. There were 3 breaches and erosion of an area of the High Hazard Cooling Pond Dam. An Emergency Repair was performed on all three breach areas. As part of the emergency repair Breach 2 was permanently repaired. Breach 1, Breach 3, and the adjacent eroded areas, located on the southern and northern sections of the dike respectively, still required permanent Improvements. Rip Rap armoring was used to further protect the dike. This project was on a high hazard dam.
Sequoia Services, LLC was selected as the prime general contractor to construct Breach 1 and Breach 3 repairs to the cooling dam. Breach 1 required the construction of a new 1500-foot emergency spillway, to be completed by lowering the dike crest. The dike crest and the downstream slope were to be armored. Breach 3 required construction of a 380 linear foot sheet pile wall to be installed on the cooling pond side, approximately 25 feet away from the toe of the dike.
